In the Bow Valley starting in 2007 Canadian Rockies Public Schools (CRPS) initiated a process we called Inspiring Hearts and Minds (IHM) to examine possible directions for the future of Education in the Valley. In 2009 then Education Minister Dave Hancock introduced a provincial wide initiative called Inspiring Education to help chart the direction for education in Alberta over the next 10 years.
On Wednesday September 5th at 7pm at the Wildflour Artisan Bakery in Banff, the Banff Ideas Bank will ask questions that help us to explore this again. One question is – Does our current school system properly prepare us for the future? Other questions will ask us to think about ideas to improve the education system and learning opportunities for students.
In October of 2011 there were two education conferences in Banff at the Banff Centre. The OECD Innovative Learning Environment (ILE) conference examined what it takes to transform education into a vibrant and innovative experience for students. That conference ended with Sir Ken Robinson talking to us about starting the education revolution. The second conference that used Sir Ken’s talk as it’s opening was the 21st Century Learning Leadership Forum. With participants from all over Canada this conference also examined how to push education into the 21st century and really meet the learning needs of students. This year’s conference is also at the Banff Centre Oct. 16-18.
I hope the Banff Ideas Bank cafe on Sept. 5th will keep the thinking and momentum going to push us along the path towards dynamic learning that realizes the CRPS Vision of “Empowering students to be their finest today and tomorrow”.
